Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Series 1, 2015)

Netflix have really started to give us girls some absolute gems of original series, first the almighty Orange Is The New Black (Series 3 of which is dropping June 12th!!) and now this new series written by comedy legend Tina Fey. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows 29 year old Kimmy (played by Ellie Kemper, who has had minor roles in a lot of hit films including Bridesmaids) as she adjusts to life in New York City after being rescued from a cult in which she was told the world had ended and made to live in a bunker in her home-town of Indiana for 15 years. Now free she decides to restart her life in New York and quickly finds herself a room-mate in the shape of a flamboyantly gay struggling actor, Titus Andromedon, and gains a job as a nanny for socialite Jacqueline Vorhees (Jane Krakowski). With their help, Kimmy struggles to adapt to an unfamiliar world and jump-start the adult life that had been taken from her.

The series basically follows Kimmy as she tries to hide the fact she has been in a bunker for 15 years whilst rediscovering the world she thought had been taken from her. As everyone knows, the world has changed a lot in 15 years and so we see Kimmy marvelling at all the new technologies around her as a young child would, but then she was only 15 herself when she was taken into the cult and so her childhood was lost to her. Kimmy’s character is brilliantly written, she still has a youngish mindset – believing anything she is told – but you can see a strength in her that helped her and the other girls in the cult survive their ordeal. You will fall in love with her character and the way she sees things, as well as having many laugh out loud moments due to her brilliant dialogue. Ellie Kemper has finally been given her chance to shine and my goodness does she do it! Ellie is fantastic as Kimmy and hopefully this is only the start to her success.

Of course it’s not just Kimmy that provides the laughs, her room-mate Titus has a lot of funny moments too as he desperately tries to break onto Broadway in any way he can, and Kimmy’s employer Mrs Vorhees is a socialite who is desperate to keep her husband interested in her whilst trying to control her rebellious step-daughter and son. Writer Tina Fey has done very well at creating a comedy series that lightly touches on some deeper moments too. Kimmy’s character is desperate to help everyone in need and so we see her and Mrs Vorhees start to form some sort of friendship as Kimmy helps her with her marriage breakdown.

Overall this series is fantastic, there are 13 episodes and they’re only 25 minutes long each so it won’t take you long to binge-watch the whole series, unfortunately we have to wait a year for the next one though! Each episode will give you plenty of laughs as Kimmy is put in many different situations and there’s even a cameo by the gorgeous John Hamm! Don’t miss out on this fantastic new series so get watching now!
