Something’s Gotta Give (2003)
Something’s Gotta Give is about a swinger (Jack Nicholson) on the cusp of being a senior citizen with a taste for young women, who to his own surprise falls in love with an accomplished woman closer to his age (Diane Keaton). I recently watched this film again having watched it originally years ago, and it brought a few questions to my mind. Mainly, what on earth would a woman in her early thirties be doing with a man closer to her mother’s age and why on earth would that said mother then go on to date the man herself?! I know mother/daughter relationships can be close but this is a little too close for my comfort! The only saving grace of the whole thing is that the daughter never actually sleeps with Jack’s character (something which is slightly gross to think about) therefore the two women haven’t shared him completely – if you get what I mean!
Once you get past this little detail the film is actually very funny and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus there is a young Keanu Reeves too which is very pleasing on the eye, though his pursuit of Diane Keaton’s character is also slightly disturbing. Why the characters must all go for huge age gaps in their relationships is a mystery to me!
The cast is fantastic, all working brilliantly together to create a film that is a perfect romantic comedy for all ages. Not only is it funny but it has some sincere and touching moments which will make you fall in love with the characters even more, particularly the two main protagonists played by Jack and Diane – even if they are both cradle-snatchers! I would thoroughly recommend this film for a girly night in or even some family entertainment as it would be enjoyed by our parents too – who may feel more of a connection towards the storyline as they are most likely of a similar age to the main characters!
